The International Olympic Committee says dozens of athletes could be banned from this year’s Olympic Games in Rio after new tests on samples from previous games turned out positive.
President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will not prevent athletes from competing at the 2018 Winter Games under the Olympic flag. The statement came a day after the IOC banned the country over a doping scandal.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said the offences were committed during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Further cases “cannot be excluded,” the IOC said.
Russia's deputy prime minister will leave his role as head of the country’s football federation for six months, according to Russian news reports. He will remain chief organizer of this year's World Cup in Russia.
The International Olympic Committee has banned two Russian cross-country skiers and a biathlete for life from the Olympics Games. The bans come as a result of the re-analysis of samples from the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.
