Inside Europe: Why do Germans love asparagus?

As the spring asparagus season peaks in Europe, we examine the German love affair with the long, stalked vegetable. Most Germans prefer the giant white variety, cultivated for its revered mild taste and opaque finish. In Berlin, the best quality asparagus comes from ‘Beelitz’ in the neighbouring state of Brandenburg. Louise Gorman drove out to the district to find out about its great reputation.
