Venice's ghetto has a long history of flourishing intellectual, artistic and spiritual identity. In spite of discrimination against jews, the ghetto has left a cultural and linguistic legacy. This year, the city is marking the ghetto's 500th anniversary with a rich programme of events, including the first staging of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, inside the Ghetto itself.
