On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the surprise withdrawal of what he called the 'main part' of Russian forces operating in Syria. The Russian intervention in the Syrian conflict began last September when Putin called for a grand global coalition to destroy Islamic State and create conditions for peace in Syria.
