FIFA President Gianni Infantino's campaign to expand the world's biggest and most lucrative soccer event from 32 to 48 nations is being harshly criticized in Europe. But it was strengthened on Monday when he brought in some legends of the game.
The FIFA Council voted on Tuesday to expand the World Cup to 48 teams beginning with the 2026 edition of the tournament. This came during a meeting of the Council in Zurich.
Gianni Infantino is open to the possibility of several countries hosting future World Cups. The FIFA president says the expansion of the tournament from 2026 makes co-hosting an attractive proposition.
Following his controversial proposal to expand the World Cup to 40 teams, Infantino wants to more than quadruple the size of the Club World Cup to 32 teams and move it to the summer.
Gianni Infantino has written to FIFA Council members setting out four proposed reform formats for the World Cup. All bar one foresee a degree of expansion - the most radical suggests 48 competitors, not 32.
