Less than half a month into 2017 and 99 inmates in Brazilian prisons have died in riots. Human rights advocates have condemned a circle of violence in Brazil.
At least nine people have died in clashes between rival gangs in one of Brazil's chronically overcrowded prisons. The South American country's penitentary system is beset by violence, riots and mass breakouts.
Brazilian authorities have detained one of Rio de Janeiro's most notorious drug traffickers. Some 3,000 officers and troops were involved in the operation to arrest the man known to most by his nickname, "Rogerio 157."
A riot in a jail in northern Brazil has left at least 56 dead and resulted in the escape of more than 150 prisoners. This marks the latest clash between the country's two biggest gangs - and the deadliest in years.
SWAT teams have quelled a riot at a prison where an uprising left 26 inmates dead over the weekend. Brazil has been hit by a series of prison revolts that have left some 140 inmates dead since the start of the year.
