During the last decade, German hospitals have wheeled out almost every fifth bed. While the number of patients grows by 300,000 every year, hospitals now have 135,000 fewer beds than ten years ago, a spokesperson for the German Hospital Society said on Wednesday. On average, patients now stay 9.8 days in hospital – in 1990, they remained there for an average of 15.3 days. The 2,240 German hospitals generate revenues of €57.1 billion ($68 billion) and employ 1.1 million people.
