German authorities praised a boy for saving his 2-year-old brother after he fell into a swimming pool, describing him as a "hero."

A police spokesperson in Korbach said on Monday that the toddler fell into the pool after his grandmother left him alone for a few moments while she retrieved a fresh diaper from the bathroom.

The 9-year-old ran outside and pulled his younger brother, who was motionless, from the pool.

The older brother called emergency services, and was given instructions by a medic on the line to resuscitate the victim while rescue crews were in transit.

By the time firefighters arrived at the house, the 9-year-old boy had restored his younger brother's breathing.

The toddler was later taken to a hospital by helicopter, where he was expected to stay for two weeks, according to the police.
