Some 11,000 Syrian refugees have applied for asylum in Germany since the start of the conflict there. There are calls for them to be given refugee status to make their integration easier.
The German chancellor has offered aid to Lebanon as it struggles to cope with nearly 1 million Syrian refugees. She is hoping to reduce migrant arrivals to Europe by supporting countries near Syria.
Angela Merkel is set to meet with leaders in Jordan and Lebanon. The two countries have the world's highest number of refugees per capita — an issue expected to be a central theme of the German chancellor's trip.
Oxfam has claimed French police have cut the shoe soles of migrant minors, altered their age on documents and forced them back to Italy. The report comes as Italy and France exchange harsh words over migrants.
In many EU countries, right-wing populists are benefiting from the unsolved migration problems. A European solution is becoming increasingly difficult, and countries are starting to go it alone.
