Concert Hour: A vigorous take on Stravinsky

This concert is our first encounter with the new principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Andres Orozco-Estrada. Born in Columbia and having studied music in Vienna, he took charge of the orchestra in Frankfurt two years ago, succeeding Paavo Jarvi.

Jarvi, he said, had a lasting impact. "And it's a good thing that he did! This orchestra has always been very flexible with a very fresh mentality, and I assume that has a lot to do with its nature and the way it is led."

The late German conductor Herbert von Karajan once said: "An orchestra doesn't have a sound. The sound is created by the conductor."

Orozco-Estrada disagrees. "I can describe the sound of this orchestra precisely, whether I'm conducting or somebody else," he said. "It's a love of clarity. A sound that is very differentiated and transparent. A warm and very full tone. And of course, great flexibility in terms of style!"

Frankfurt Radio Symphony

After a sampling of the Jarvi era with the orchestra from Frankfurt, then the Stravinsky, we have an encore by composer Anatoly Lyadov, who became known for taking Russian folklore and cleverly combining it with modern symphonic traditions. His piece called "Baba-Yaga" is named after a Russian witch, a Hansel and Gretel type with a culinary affinity for small children.
