I hope that Bad Doberan becomes better known, both in Germany and abroad, and that this will bring us more visitors. Increased tourism means more trade for local businesses, and that will mean more money for the town overall.

In addition, the summit has brought much needed investment and infrastructure to the town and the region.

This was already urgently needed, but because of the cooperation of the federate, state and city authorities, it has happened much quicker. These developments have improved the quality of life for our residents and also benefited our guests.

I see the likely anti-G8 demonstrations as part of our democracy. Free expression of opinion is one of our basic legal rights, as it should be. Therefore everyone who wishes to protest peacefully here is welcome. Violent demonstrations are not just distressing; it's an unacceptable way to change something. Of course there is some concern that it could happen here, but I don't think it's our major worry.
