October 5, 2012

An American tourist has been shot dead by police after he had killed one person at a resort on the Red Sea. It's understood the assailant previously worked at the hotel and had quarreled with an employee.

The incident occurred Friday at the resort town of Eilat, when the man opened fire in the lobby of a hotel.

Israel Radio reported the tourist had previously been employed at the hotel. It said the gunman had a fight with a hotel employee, and when a security guard tried to step in, he grabbed the guard's gun and started shooting.

"The shooter barricaded himself into the kitchen and was surrounded by police forces, including special units, who asked him to turn himself in," police spokeswoman Luba Samri told the news agency AFP.

"He opened fire during the negotiations with police. They fired back and killed him," she said.

Possible motives at this stage are unclear.
