Growing unemployment - The recession begins to claim jobs in Europe's largest economy

Janine RabeJuly 30, 2009

Recession watch here in Germany. The latest unemployment figures for Europe's largest economy have just been released--and they show that the recession has begun to take hold of the labor market. In July, unemployment rose to 8 point 2 percent. That means a loss of 52,000 jobs for the month. Most economists say unemployment has remained stable in the recession thanks to short-time programs allowing workers to keep their jobs while working less and getting less pay. But analysts expected companies to begin shedding workers in the third quarter.
