On the International Day of Mine Awareness, the UN aims to draw attention to the Mine Ban Treaty. It hopes every country in the world will sign it - but Russia, China, India and the US have yet to do so.
Intensified fighting has centered around Hodeida, a key port city the government says is a conduit for rebel arms. One aid worker likened war in Hodeida to war in Antwerp or Rotterdam, and said it must be avoided.
Despite being weapons of war it is usually civilians who fall victim to landmines. Last year more children than ever were among the more than 2,000 people killed by mines.
Forces allied to the Saudi-led coalition say they have entered Hodeida airport as part of an assault to retake the port city. Fears are rising of a new humanitarian crisis if food imports, from the port, are disrupted.
Russia, Iran and Turkey have announced that a fourth track of peace talks will open in Sochi in January 2018. Both the UN and the Syrian opposition have acknowledged the new peace push without embracing it.
