Germany’s Coastlines

The storm-tossed North Sea, the gentle Baltic Sea, island living, more than 1000 kilometers of beaches, towns rich in maritime and Hanseatic tradition, and the largest single stretch of mud flats on Earth.

Germany’s Coastlines

The 6-part documentary series “Germany’s Coastlines” captures the unique beauty of the coastal stretches along Germany’s North-Sea and Baltic coasts from new and fresh perspectives. Breath-taking aerial shots alternate with conversations with a select few who have found their peace and their place by the sea and wouldn’t live anywhere else. An abundance of remarkable images and memorable stories against spectacular natural backdrops fill three episodes about the North Sea and three about the Baltic.

Part 1:

The North Sea from Papenburg to Bremerhaven

23.06.2010 DW-TV Im Focus Insel Lütje Hörn
The East Frisian island of Lütje Hörn

In the first episode we set off from Papenburg on the Ems past the East Frisian islands to Bremerhaven. Aerial footage shows what’s special about the Wadden Sea mud flats and the harsh beauty of East Frisia. The East Frisian islands can be reached on foot at low tide, but they are completely isolated when the tide comes in. Anyone missing a ferry has to wait six hours for the next high tide. The only alternative is taking a plane. Pilot Jan-Lüppen Brunzema flies back and forth thirty times a day, whatever the weather.

The North Sea from St. Peter Ording to the Halligen

23.06.2010 DW-TV Im Focus Halligpostillion
Hallig postilion Fiede Nissen on the job

The second episode begins on the Eiderstedt peninsula and will lead across the Wadden Sea to the world of the “Halligen”, islets without protective dykes.
The largest Hallig is Langeness, a world of its own where nothing goes unnoticed by your neighbors. Fiede Nissen is the islanders’ link to civilization – bringing the mail first by boat and then by rail along a narrow causeway joining some of the islands and the mainland. If there is oncoming traffic on the single track, the rule is to give way to those who’ve come more than halfway towards you.

The North Sea from Sylt to Amrum

23.06.2010 DW-TV Im Focus Austernzüchterin
Bine Pöhner breeds oysters on the island of Sylt

The third leg of the journey along Germany’s coastlines begins in Seebüll. This is where Emil Nolde painted his most beautiful pictures, inspired by his flower garden. Today, gardener Andreas Weber looks after the painter’s legacy.
Across the 11-kilometer Hindenburgdamm causeway lies Sylt, for years Germany’s most popular holiday island. Autumn storm tides regularly drive back the sandy coastline, but the plucky islanders just as regularly reclaim the lost land by pumping millions of cubic meters of sand back onto their beaches.

Part 4:

The Baltic from Flensburg to Eckernförde

23.06.2010 DW-TV Im Focus Rumhändler
Rum merchant Martin Johannsen of Flensburg

In this episode the journey will cover the stretch from Flensburg to Eckernförde.
It was from this northernmost German access to the Baltic, Flensburg, that sailors set off for the Caribbean in their 18th-century quest for liquid gold of the West Indies, rum. For Martin Johannsen, rum, a sugar cane distillate, still has something disreputable about it, purely a sailors’ drink, he says. But it has become a sought-after, upmarket product. The Johannsens supply the town’s restaurants and bars and also sell refined rum varieties online.

Henning Nockel enjoys kitesurfing over the Salzhaff

In the fifth episode we make our way from Lübeck to Rostock, then via Wismar to Salzhaff, for some daredevil kitesurfer action. A bit further northeast is the fishing village of Rerik with its early morning hustle and bustle. The last stop on this trip is the port city of Rostock. Professional diver Eyk-Uwe Pap sets off on an underwater mission to service the “Darsser Schwelle” measuring station that collects data on climate change.
