Germany has set its sights on hosting the 2012 or 2014 European athletics championships in Nuremberg, the nation's athletics supremo Clemens Prokop said on Saturday.

"We are interested in principle in both championships," said Prokop, the president of the German Athletics Federation (DLV). "The stadium has the perfect size for European championships. It is no coincidence that (European federation) EAA president Hansjoerg Wirtz will visit us tomorrow (Sunday)."

The Nuremberg stadium, which hosts the weekend's national championships, seats 45,000.

The European championships are to be staged every two years instead of every four after the 2010 edition in Barcelona. Germany last hosted the continental event 2002 in Munich, and Berlin will stage the 2009 world championships.
