Germany has donated some 11,000 new books to Baghdad University at a formal ceremony attended by the newly-appointed German ambassador to Iraq Bernd Erbel and the director of Baghdad University's German faculty, Fuad Mohammed. Its 500 students of German language and literature will be able to use the library once the new semester begins in October. The "Books for Iraq" scheme is valued at up to €200,000 ($243,270) and was first mooted at the 2003 Frankfurt Book fair, when the German Foreign office invited an Iraqi delegation to the event to discuss the project and contacts with German publishers, librarians, historians and scientists. The university's library went up in flames during the US-led strike on Iraq.
