Germany by Scooter - 2473 Kilometers in 80 Days

Is it possible to travel the length of Germany from its northernmost point on the island of Sylt to its southernmost point in Bavaria in 80 days on a scooter? DW Reporter Michael Wigge wanted to find out.

On his long and arduous journey with a camera and a scooter, Michael Wigge stops off in all sorts of unusual, outlandish and exciting spots along his route. It takes him over country lanes, bicycle trails and fields all the way from north to south in his home country. Anything else would be much too dangerous on a scooter. Besides, it’s a way to discover the Germany that exists far off the beaten tourist track. His plan is to arrive at the southernmost point, Haldenwanger Eck in the Allgäu Alps, after 80 days and - according to his sat nav - 2473 kilometers. A five-part scooter trip through the lesser-known Germany.

Part 5: From the Black Forest to the Allgäu

07.2013 DW Euromaxx Wigge Tretroller Folge 26

The cuckoo clock from the black forest.

Michael Wigge‘s research has revealed that aficionados of well-cultivated facial hair have got together in southern Germany and founded a beard and moustache club. It’s a detail scurrilous enough to warrant a stop on his journey from north to south. Another German specialty is the Black Forest cuckoo clock... not only are there numerous firms that make them, the area is also home to the world’s biggest cuckoo clock. With one complication: there are two towns laying claim to the title. Our fearless reporter Wigge takes a close look at this battle of the giant timepieces. In the last episode of the series, after 80 days and at least 2,473 kilometers on his scooter, Michael Wigge aims to reach the southern tip of Germany: the Haldenwanger Eck in the Allgäu Alps. The question is: will he make it?
