Across Germany thousands staged demonstrations in solidarity with refugees. In Berlin, protestors demanded better conditions for refugees at the city's central intake office for migrants - the site of chaotic scenes in recent weeks.
186,644 asylum seekers were registered last year. That's down more than 100,000 from 2016 - the Germany Interior Ministry says the massive numbers from the height of the crisis have been "overcome."
Since opening its doors in 2015, no unaccompanied minors have been deported from Germany. That is soon set to change, as Berlin has started building centers in Morocco to house deported minors, according to a report.
The German government and businesses should do more to get refugees into the job market, local councils have said. Regional authorities say they are too often left with the task of integration.
The German Medical Association has said mandatory age tests for refugees are ethically wrong and imprecise. Calls to enforce testing have intensified after a teenage girl was killed, allegedly by a young Afghan refugee.
