GERMAN TV: Dr. Wolfgang Krüger to Become Managing Director/Programming

Director of DW-TV Moves to New Post on January 1, 2002

Dr. Wolfgang Krüger (51), Director of DW-TV, has been named managing director/programming for GERMAN TV after being recommended for the position by the director-general of Deutsche Welle (DW) and Germany's ARD and ZDF public broadcasting networks. Dr. Krüger will take up the new post on January 1, 2002, DW Director-General Erik Bettermann announced in Cologne on December 19, 2001.

GERMAN TV is a German-language "Best-of" broadcaster with a pre-dominantely entertainment and arts-oriented programme selected from DW, ARD and ZDF material. GERMAN TV begins initially on April 1, 2002 as a Pay-TV in the United States. DW is responsible for programme content in accordance with an agreement signed by the director-generals of the networks involved.

Wolfgang Krüger has been responsible for the GERMAN TV project at DW since November, 2000. He is also a member of the joint ARD/ZDF and DW foreign television work group. Dr. Krüger has been the director of DW-TV since May 1, 1992, and before that was director of television at RIAS TV in Berlin for two years.

Dr. Krüger studied history and German literature at the University of Düsseldorf and began his journalistic career with the Westfälische Rundschau newspaper in Dortmund. In 1979, he switched to the WDR television network where he later became the personal assistant of WDR Director-General, Friedrich Nowottny. In 1988, he took the post of editor-in-chief at RIAS TV.
