The injured youngsters - aged between 17 and 19 - and in the 12th grade at Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium had been on a school trip to Sorrento, southern Italy.

On Sunday morning, the coach they were returning to Germany in was traveling on the A22, a highway that runs passed the northern city of Trento, when it left the carriageway and flipped onto its side.

Seventeen teenagers - among the 45 people on board - were hospitalized, but officials said none of the injuries was serious and the students were later released. The driver was also hurt.

The cause of the accident was unclear, Italian media, however, suggested the driver had possibly fallen asleep for a few seconds.

Officials said those on board would have had trouble escaping from the wreckage without help.

Civil protection officials said the uninjured teenagers were taken to a local gym.
