Fears that the German Open Women's Tournament would be moved to Hamburg have been officially quashed. Despite financial woes, the competition will be held in Berlin from May 3 to 9, 2004, German Tennis Association head Georg von Waldenfels confirmed in a letter to Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit. This year's German Open ended with losses of €400,000 ($470,00). The capital could ultimately lose the tournament to another German city if Berlin doesn't make a bigger effort to ensure the event's financial viability, von Waldenfels warned.
