German Health Funds Expect €2.5 Billion Deficit

Germany's Krankenkassen, or public health funds, on Tuesday reported they are expecting a larger deficit for the 2002 fiscal year than that foreseen by the federal government. The public health care system is predicting a deficit of €2.5 billion ($2.49 billion). Only one week ago, Federal Minister for Health and Social Security Ulla Schmidt said her ministry anticipated a €2 billion deficit. The public health funds anticipate an increase in monthly health insurance payments for the average person to increase from 14 percent to 14.3 percent of their income.
