In an exclusive interview with DW, Ursula von der Leyen said she was pleased to hear reassuring words from US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on the importance of NATO and transatlantic relations.
The US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has distanced himself from remarks made by President Donald Trump about Iraq's oil. Mattis also indicated support for Iraqis who served with US troops to be spared Trump's travel ban.
US Defense Secretary Mattis has told NATO that Washington would consider a "moderate" commitment to the alliance if other members do not pay their full share. Earlier, he called NATO a bedrock of transatlantic relations.
Von der Leyen kicked off the international security meeting by calling for a more globally committed United States. The US Defense Secretary affirmed the importance of Europe to the US and praised German troops.
Moscow has secretly deployed a SSC-8 cruise missile, a move violating the 1987 INF deal accredited with ending the Cold War. The news comes as the Trump administration finds itself without a national security adviser.
