German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is in Mali to visit the troops and meet with her French counterpart. It comes after two German pilots died in a crash.
Two German army pilots have died after their helicopter crashed near Gao, eastern Mali. At the time of the crash, the helicopter was monitoring "confrontations."
The EU and Mali have reached a deal seeking to stop migrants from attempting life-threatening sea crossings to reach Europe. The EU will also invest money to help Mali and its neighbors improve border security.
