Germany’s interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, and his Moroccan counterpart are seeking closer cooperation in sending back migrants who enter Germany illegally. The pressure is greater in the wake of attacks in Cologne over the new year.
State interior ministers have agreed that the current ban on deporting Syrians back to their native country will remain in force for at least another year. Some states had proposed ending the ban in mid-2018.

The European Union is upping the pressure on countries that don't take back rejected asylum-seekers by making it harder to obtain visas, a newspaper reported. The threat has already resulted in a deal with Bangladesh.
