Bashir Ama was a people smuggler in Agadez, a desert city in Niger known until recently as the people-smuggling capital of Africa. But conditions have changed, and Bashir Ama has opted to fund a football team instead.
False rumors about a safe passage to Europe have drawn a large number of migrants to Agadez – even from far-away Asian countries. This is putting pressure on the city as well as on migrant organizations on the ground.
The life-threatening journey to Europe that many young people from West Africa are embarking on is the subject of DW's latest multi-media project, "The Migration Dilemma."
More than 100,000 migrants pass through Agadez in Niger every year as they struggle to reach Europe. Some pass through it a second time - on the return journey back to their homeland.
