The English Channel separates southern England from northern France. Ferries transport freight and passengers between Britain and mainland Europe around the clock. They depend on trade between Britain and the EU.
The collision occured overnight between the British port of Dover and and the French town of Dunkirk. The English Channel is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes with more than 500 vessels passing through every day.
At least five people have been shot after a fight involving more than 100 Eritreans and Afghans erupted in Calais. The French interior minister blamed traffickers for "fueling daily violence and brawls."
A dozen fishing boats blocked the narrow shipping channel into Calais, halting shipping movements at France's busiest passenger port. The fishermen are upset with losses caused by electric pulse fishing.
French President Emmanuel Macron says France wants more money from the UK and to negotiate a better police cooperation to handle the migrants in Calais. He made the comments during a visit to the French port town.
