The English Channel separates southern England from northern France. Ferries transport freight and passengers between Britain and mainland Europe around the clock. They depend on trade between Britain and the EU.
The collision occured overnight between the British port of Dover and and the French town of Dunkirk. The English Channel is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes with more than 500 vessels passing through every day.
The two men were each sentenced to 30 months jail after admitting making several flights to England carrying migrants. They were caught earlier this week leaving an aerodrome close to the port town of Calais.
A third man has been arrested in connection with the bombing of a London Underground train last week. Two other men detained over the weekend remain in custody.
The famously anonymous street artist Banksy has unveiled a new artwork, this time in the UK coastal town of Dover. His subject: the UK's impending departure from the European Union.
