At DW's Global Media Forum in Bonn participants had the chance to point out their views on freedom. So, let's be a little philosophical.
Journalists, politicians and activists debate issues of identity and diversity for three days in Bonn. DW hands out its 'Freedom of Speech Award' at a conference packed with workshops, panel discussions, art and music.
Addressing the plenary at the 9th Global Media Forum (GMF) in Bonn on June 13, 2016, DW Director General Peter Limbourg invited all participants to discuss the forum's key topics: "Media.Freedom.Values."
At the GMF 2016 Julia Bernstorf, DW Deputy Director of Innovative Programming, said: "Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential for democracy. Civil society needs human rights to be strong and powerful."
The rights of members of the LGBT community are once more in the spotlight. The differences between the developing world and the West may, however, be smaller than many imagine.
