France: An imam who does not want women to cover their faces

Hassen Chalghoumi is the only imam in France who supports a ban on the burqa. For that, he is paying a high price.

Chalghoumi has received death threats; extremists often besiege his mosque in a Paris suburb. But he will not back down. He says Islam does not require women to cover up entirely and to do so is to deprive women of their freedom. Chalghoumi is also keen to promote cordial relations between Muslims and Jews.
