Flashback: Maritime Search and Rescue Service

August 19, 2013

In 1854, eighty people drowned when the "Johanne" was caught up in a storm on the North Sea. The fate of the ship's passengers led a navigation teacher from Bremen to found the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service. Back then, rescuers had to reach shipwrecked passengers by rowboat. Today they have rescue lifeboats and helicopters at their disposal.
