Torsten Schmidtke and André Lehmann from the Potsdam swimming club have secured their places at the 2012 Paralympics. They are two of 150 German athletes who will be competing at the event, which kicks off in London on August 29.
The Paralympics were followed by enthusiastic fans cheering on their new heroes. However, many still see the Paralympics as a second-class sporting event, which is a mistake, writes DW sports editor Joscha Weber.
Marieke Vervoort caused a stir when it was reported that she planned to kill herself after the Paralympics end this weekend. But the Belgian wheelchair racer isn't ready to die yet - and still aims to win one last medal.
