Qualifying a demand by German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder that new permanent members of the UN Security Council should receive veto power, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said Schröder's remarks were just an initial suggestion. "I wouldn't get excited about it," Fischer told reporters after talks with Italy's Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini in Berlin, noting that Schröder had made clear in a television interview that his position was not final. Italy opposes a permanent Council seat for Germany.
