Schalke go out after a dramatic second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal against Ajax. The Germans had been heading for the semis before two Ajax goals in extra time.
Goals from Leon Goretzka, Guido Burgstaller and Daniel Caligiuri looked to be sending Schalke through to the semifinals. But Ajax hit back twice in extra time and progressed on aggregate.
The last German team in European competition has been eliminated. Schalke lost to Ajax of Amsterdam in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The Germans had to dig out of a two-goal hole from the first leg of the matchup. But they almost pulled it off in a game that went into extra time.
Schalke dug themselves into a pretty big hole last Thursday when they lost to Ajax in Amsterdam. But young midfielder Leon Goretzka is hoping the home crowd can give them a boost in the second leg of their quarterfinal.
