Euro 2016: The pictorial highlights from Germany-Poland
Familiar opponents
Germany and Poland are two teams that know each other well. Not only did they face off in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Three of the Polish starting eleven, including Lukasz Piszczek (r) of Dortmund, ply their trade in the German Bundesliga.
First chance for Götze
The Germans generated in a decent opportunity in the opening minutes. But Mario Göze, playing the role of the lone center forward, is hardly a giant of a man, and his header, after he was picked out by a cross, was off the mark.
High balls didn't work
The Poles were clearly mindful of Germany's physical qualities. They made sure they had numbers in the box on set pieces and against crosses. Here Lukasz Fabianski has no problem getting his mitts to the ball.
Lewandowski on a short leash
One of the duels of the evening was convalesent Mats Hummels against superstar Polish striker Robert Lewandowski. The two are set to become teammates at Bayern Munich next season, but in the Stade de France no quarter was asked or given.
Löw on best behavior
After his nervous habits with his digits made him an unwilling Internet meme, Germany coach Joachim Löw seemed to concentrate on keeping his hands where everyone could see them. But that didn't stop him from scratching his head at a boring first half.
Close shave after the restart
Poland almost took the lead immmediately after play resumed. The German defense was caught napping, and a cross beat both Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer. But Arkadiusz Milik missed the ball by a hair of his chinny-chin-chin.
Germany weather Polish pressure
In the early stages of the second half, Poland generated the better opportunities. But the defensive tandem of Hummels and Boateng had an answer for everything that was thrown at them. Bayern Munich's defense is going to be really tough next season.
Özil can't find his range
In one of Germany's better moments in the second half, Mesut Özil found himself surprisingly alone in front of the Polish goal. But the Arsenal playmaker couldn't steer the ball into the net.
No winner in the Stade de France
The match ended 0-0. To be honest, it was one of the more tedious clashes at the European Championships. Both teams will now try to secure progression - and possibly win Group 3 - in games next week against lesser opposition.
