Turkey has slipped to position 151 of 180 in Reporters without Borders’ rating of international press freedom. Sedat Ergin is one of those facing charges for insulting the president. Deutsche Welle is honoring him with its Freedom of Speech Award.
The president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Jeff Mason, has been given the 2017 DW Freedom of Speech Award. Mason said he hopes it will "shed light on the importance of press freedom around the world."
Sedat Ergin, the editor-in-chief of the Turkish daily "Hürriyet," is to receive Deutsche Welle's Freedom of Speech Award. His attendance at DW's Global Media Forum in June hinges on legal battles in Istanbul.
