UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson worries about the negative view on refugees and migrants in Europe. In an interview with DW in Brussels he said Europe needs to accept the necessity of migration and diversity as a source for a vital society.
The EU has unlocked €3 billion ($3.7 billion) for projects to help Syrian refugees in Turkey in a second payment from the 2016 migration deal. More than a million refugees have already benefited from the funds.
Countries who refuse to take back migrants living illegally in the EU could face problems in the future when their citizens apply for visas. New rules proposed by the EC would set stricter conditions.
