The iron lattice tower was erected as the entrance arch to the Paris World's Fair, but it was also intended to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the French Revolution. With some 7 million visitors annually, it remains one of the most popular monuments in the world. Designed by engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, this icon is more than a mere tourist attraction: it's also the most important radio and television transmitter in Paris.
