Egyptians queued to vote on a new constitution to support the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. The poll is turning out to be a show of support for defense minister General Abdel Fattah al Sisi, who could be the next president.
The group had allegedly planned to kill Sisi in two separate conspiracies. Prosecutors have give no details on how the plots were foiled.
A botched raid has left more than 50 soldiers and police dead, according to reports. The government has struggled to contain an insurgency since the military overthrew Egypt's first democratically elected leader.
US President Donald Trump has said his administration will foster a "long and strong partnership" with Egypt leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The Egyptian strongman has faced strong criticism over his human rights record.
Riot police and armored vehicles stifled planned anti-austerity protests in Cairo and around Egypt on Friday. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned that the economic reforms will not be scaled back.
