Learning German is the key

About one million refugees are expected to arrive in Germany in 2015. At least half of them may well be eligible to apply for asylum, because civil wars rage in their home countries, or because they are in danger of being persecutedfor political, religious or ethnic reasons.

The new page gives practical assistance with everyday life, with the main focus on access to German language courses. Refugees trying to find work, accommodation or child care, seeking medical advice or simply wishing to learn more about the country, its political system and its population, will find plenty of useful information in the online guide.

Speaking the language is the key

Special attention is given to language courses. Speaking German is the key to a new life in Germany, as it is the only way to tackle everyday tasks. DW has developed an easy-to-use, illustrated “German coach” especially for refugees. Videos and pictures help the user find the right course and level.

Rights and obligations

The website also offers basic legal advice. Experts explain the right of residence, compulsory education and educational recognition practices, for example.

So far DW provides comprehensive information in six languages: English, Arabic, Pashto, Urdu and Dari – and German, so that national organizations, language teachers and volunteers can use the online guide as well. In addition, DW has translated the most important pieces of information into ten other languages, which is available upon request.
