Lufthansa-Air Berlin Deal
Aviation watchers will know it has been a challenging year in European skies. UK airline easyJet has felt the squeeze like many of its rivals. Yet it's bullish about the future despite a sharp fall in profits.
Germany's Lufthansa Group looks set to expand, even as some rival airlines cut back or fall into bankruptcy. It has set its sights on becoming a leading global player. But air travel markets remain fiercely competitive.
After nearly four decades of plying the skies, Germany's once second-largest airline has stopped operating, with many employees fearing to be left without work amid attempts to sell the remaining assets.
Lufthansa has confirmed it will purchase large parts of insolvent airline Air Berlin. The deal will see Lufthansa take on several parts of the Air Berlin business, as well as taking on 3,000 Air Berlin workers.
