2017 was Africa Year in Germany. One aim was to increase private investment in Africa. For Stefan Liebing, head of the German–African Business Association, not all the goals have been met.
On a visit to Berlin, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi called for an end to ongoing clashes between government and opposition forces in his country. He also appealed for more German investment.
Germany wants to use its G20 presidency to mobilize more assistance for Africa. But it has yet to work out a strategy which has been properly coordinated between government ministries and time is running out.
The United States helped to rebuild Europe after World War Two. Germany's development minister wants a similar initiative to kick-start African development.
