The bus reportedly crashed into cars that had been slowed by heavy traffic and fell 30 meters (100 feet) off a viaduct and into a ravine, rescuers said. State radio reported the bus driver was among the dead.

A fire service spokesman said at least 11 people were injured and have been taken to hospital.

The coach was carrying more than 40 people back to Naples after a pilgrimage in the southern region of Campania, Italian media sources reported.
