Dortmund sign Bürki
June 14, 2015One Roman in, one Roman out? That the obvious question after the news broke that Freiburg keeper Roman Bürki was joining Dortmund on a 3.5 million euro transfer.
Freiburg were relegated last month, but that was no fault of the Swiss keeper. Indeed, Bürki was the second highest rated player at his position according to the football newspaper "kicker" - which put him ahead of such big names as Manuel Neuer, Benrnd Leno and Kevin Trapp.
Bürki was high up on the wish-list of incoming Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, and the transfer calls into question the status of his namesake Roman Weidenfeller. The 34-year-old was Dortmund's number one through the titles of recent years and tended goal for Germany in the national team's most recent match, a 7-0 win over Gibraltar. But his position is anything but certain as Dortmund undertake what's certain to be a major squad shake-up.
"My contract with Dortmund runs until 2016, and I assume I'll be there when training starts of June 29," Weidenfeller told reporters.
Another casualty could be Mitch Langerak. Long Weidenfeller's understudy, the Australian was tipped to inherit the position, but performed poorly in his most recent outing, Dortmund's loss to Wolfsburg in the final of the German Cup.
