Lifelines - Face to Face - The Painter Max Beckmann
The painter Max Beckmann was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Beckmann was born in Leipzig in 1884 and died in New York in 1950. Self-portraits make up a large part of Beckmann’s oeuvre: In 1938 he said, "The self is the most mysterious secret in the world.” His paintings were expressive, contradictory and uncompromising. This documentary explores the artist’s life and tries to discover more about the man and his intentions.
