The neo-Nazis Uwe Mundlos, Beate Zschäpe and Uwe Böhnhardt were in the sights of the authorities for years. When the three extremists planned their first attacks in the late 1990s, domestic intelligence caught wind of the plans and informed the police. But the three went underground, and took to robbing banks, laying bombs and killing. They were driven by racial hatred, and are suspected of murdering nine people with foreign backgrounds as well as a police woman. How could it come to that? How much did the authorities know and why were the three not stopped?
