Autocrats and populists are increasingly undermining freedom of speech and the media worldwide. The digital transformation is also changing the media and offering new ways of encouraging free opinion.

DW’s programming provides its viewers and users with a reliable response to these political and technological changes, with neutral reporting and credible journalism at the forefront. “We must not take sides, except in support of human rights,” says DW Director Peter Limbourg in the Interview.

All parties are in agreement over one issue: Culture is “active democracy,” and great emphasis is placed on it in Germany. How is this nation of culture doing in election year? Is Germany really the world champion of culture, as people here like to think? In a special edition, Arts.21 conducts a “culture check on Germany.”
