The opening of Cuba’s economy is already transforming the country’s landscape. Some fear that the capital, Havana, is at risk of losing its run-down charm.
There appear to be few survivors after a passenger jet carrying 113 people crashed shortly after takeoff. The flight from the capital, Havana, to the eastern city of Holguin went down near the airport.
Cuba began two days of national mourning for the victims of a plane crash in Havana. President Diaz-Canel ordered a probe into the Boeing 737 accident, which killed all but three of the 113 passengers and crew.
Just three people had survived Cuba's deadliest aviation disaster in 30 years. But one of the three women has now succumbed to her injuries.
Cuba's government will come under pressure to be transparent about the circumstances of last week's plane crash. However, transparency is by no means certain, the Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez writes.
