January 22, 2014

After much hesitation, Croatia has arrested Josip Perković, the former head of its secret service during the Yugoslav era. A European Arrest Warrant had long been in force.

Germany believes Perković was involved in the 1983 assassination of Stjepan Đureković, a Croatian defector who lived in Bavaria. A Croatian court has already ruled that Perković can be extradited to Germany to stand trial. The case had damaged relations between Croatia and Germany. There's been speculation that Zagreb tried to prevent Perković's extradition as the former intelligence chief possesses extensive knowledge about other crimes.
