Matt PearsonSeptember 6, 2016

Glenn Maxwell's blistering 145 not out fired Australia to a world record Twenty 20 score of 263-3 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. It's the second major cricketing record that's been broken in eight days.

Maxwell opened the batting for the Australians and registered his maiden T20 ton in his 35th match, with his score coming off just 65 balls and featuring 14 fours and nine sixes.

The total beats Sri Lanka's 260-6 against Kenya in 2007 and comes just over a week after England claimed the One Day International record score with 444-3 against Pakistan.

Maxwell's opening partner David Warner helped set the tone with 28 off 12 balls to help set a solid foundation that enabled Mawell to tee off and help the Aussies to an innings run rate of 13.15.

Once Warner was bowled by off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake, Maxwell was joined by Usman Khawaja who scored 36 off 22 balls.

After facing just one ball from the final over of the innings, Maxwell fell just short of teammate Aaron Finch's T20 world record score of 156.
